Then there’s the "Grove Companion" — a modular bench set that integrates a companion seat on each side of an accessible bay. It encourages conversation and integration, not separation. I’ve placed these along winding pathways, under shade trees, and near water features. They don’t scream "accessible"; they whisper "welcome."

Every design follows these core principles: armrests that extend to the front edge for levering up, a firm but slip-resistant surface, and a backrest that supports the lower back without feeling intrusive. I also ensure a clear 36-inch access path around each bench, because compliance isn’t just about the bench itself—it’s about how it lives in the space.

What I love most is seeing a child in a wheelchair sit beside a grandparent on a standard seat, both sharing the same view. That’s the quiet triumph of thoughtful design.
