How do we make sure the benches are accessible to everyone in our landscape facility?

As a bench who has lived in this landscape facility for years, I’ve seen countless visitors come and go. Some rest their weary legs on me after a long walk; others sit quietly to read or watch the birds. But I’ve also noticed that not everyone can use me easily. A person using a wheelchair might find the path too narrow to reach me. An elderly visitor with a cane might struggle because I’m placed on uneven ground. A parent pushing a stroller might have to leave me behind because there’s no clear space around me. These moments make me realize that being a bench isn’t just about offering a seat—it’s about offering a welcome to everyone, regardless of their ability or age.

So, how do we make sure I and my fellow benches are accessible to all? First, we must be placed on firm, level surfaces with enough clearance around us—at least 36 inches on each side—so that wheelchairs and walkers can approach and turn comfortably. Second, our height and depth should follow universal design standards: a seat height of around 17 to 19 inches works best for most people to sit and stand without strain, and armrests at each end help individuals with limited balance. Third, the paths leading to us must be wide, smooth, and free of obstacles like rocks or deep gravel. Even the materials matter: reflective or contrasting colors on our edges can help people with low vision see us clearly.

But accessibility is more than measurements. It’s about thoughtful placement. I thrive when I’m positioned near shaded areas for hot days, close to restrooms or water fountains, and along gentle slopes instead of steep hills. It’s also essential to vary the types of seating—some benches with backs, some without, some at different heights, and even a few with built-in tables for wheelchair users or people with picnic needs. This way, everyone can find a spot that feels right for them.

Finally, we need regular check-ins from maintenance crews to ensure we stay clean, stable, and free from damage. Because even a small crack or a wobbly leg can make me unusable for someone who depends on my support. When we benches are truly accessible, we don’t just serve as furniture—we become quiet companions, resting spots for conversations, and inclusive landmarks where every visitor knows they belong.
