I’m a planter box, and I love showing off my leafy companions. But I’ll admit it—when I get watered, I sometimes let a little runoff trickle down my sides. That water doesn’t just disappear; it sits on the pavement under me, carrying minerals, dirt, and organic matter that can leave ugly rust-colored or dark stains. Over time, those stains become stubborn and embarrassing. So how do I—and you—prevent this from happening? First, give me a drip tray. A sturdy tray that catches excess water is my best friend. Make sure it’s large enough to cover the entire base of my box, and empty it after watering so it doesn’t overflow. Second, lift me up with pot feet or small risers. That creates air circulation and lets any stray droplets evaporate before they can soak into the concrete. Third, place a piece of outdoor carpet or a rubber mat under me—something that can absorb and dry quickly. Finally, consider using a sealant on your pavement. A good stone or concrete sealer makes the surface less porous, so even if a little water escapes, it won’t penetrate and stain. Treat me well, and I’ll keep your pavement as clean as the day you set me down.
