What's the average lifespan of a metal trashcan in a coastal environment?

If you were a metal trash can placed by the shore, your life story would be an epic, albeit rusty, tragedy. You'd start your service gleaming with promise, but the coastal environment is a relentless foe. The average lifespan for one of us metal sentinels here is brutally short—often just 2 to 5 years. It's a harsh reality dictated by a constant, invisible assault.

Our greatest enemy is salt. Not the occasional grain, but a perpetual, misty breath of salt spray carried by the ocean wind. This salt settles on every surface, attracting moisture from the humid air and creating a highly conductive electrolyte on our metal skin. This process, called saltwater corrosion, attacks the protective layers. For galvanized steel cans—the most common type—the zinc coating is slowly eaten away. Once it's breached, the raw steel beneath is exposed and rust begins its rapid, cancerous spread. Stainless steel cousins fare better, lasting 5-10 years or more, but even they can succumb to pitting corrosion in the most aggressive salty, humid conditions.

The elements are a conspiring gang. The sun's UV rays degrade paint and plastics. Wind drives the salty mist deeper into seams and scratches. Frequent rain, while it may rinse some salt away, often just ensures a constant cycle of wetness, accelerating the electrochemical reactions of corrosion. It's a ceaseless cycle of attack.
