Think of me as your plant's home. Just like any good home, I need a solid start. While I don't always demand a complex foundation on solid ground, what happens inside my base is crucial. The idea of a gravel layer is like giving me a dedicated drainage system. It's not strictly mandatory for all of us, but oh, how it helps! A base layer of gravel or small stones creates a reservoir for excess water, preventing my soil from becoming a soggy, compacted mess. It allows air to reach my roots and stops water from pooling around them, which they absolutely despise.
