Let me put it this way: I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve carried a lot of things in my lifetime—pizza boxes, grocery bags, even a ficus. But the moment someone filled me with damp, dark soil, I became a completely different creature. When I’m empty, I’m delicate but manageable. You can slide me across a patio. You can whisper sweet nothings and lift me with a friend. But once that soil pours in—and trust me, soil is heavier than it looks—I become stubborn. A standard 18-inch ceramic pot filled with wet soil can weigh well over 100 pounds. That’s like asking me to carry a whole person. And ceramics? We are fragile. We crack. We chip. We hold grudges.

To move me safely when I’m full, you need strategy, not just muscle. First, never grab me by the rim—that’s how I break and spill dirt all over your shoes. Instead, use a dolly with a padded strap, or better yet, a plant caddy with wheels that you slide underneath me before I’m filled. If you must lift me from below, get at least two people, wear a back brace, and always lift with your legs, not your spine.

But here’s the secret the pots don’t often tell you: If you water me just before the move, I become even heavier. If you let me dry out a little first, I become lighter and less likely to crack from the shifting weight. Also, remove the top few inches of soil and put it in a separate bag—that little trick reduces my mass by about 15%. Then, after the move, you just top me off again. No one has to know.

So is it difficult? Yes. But not impossible. Just remember: I am heavy, I am fragile, and I have zero interest in rolling down the driveway. Treat me with respect, use the right tools, and maybe bribe me with a little fresh compost. Then I’ll let you move me. Maybe.
