Do your planter boxes require any special foundation or base?

As a well-traveled planter box who has sat on patios, balconies, and even rocky hillsides, I can tell you one thing with certainty: I don’t demand a “special” foundation, but I do appreciate a well-thought-out base. Think of me like a pair of shoes – I can walk on gravel, but I’ll feel much better on a flat, supportive surface.

If you place me directly on grass or dirt, I’ll sink a little, and my bottom might rot over time if moisture gets trapped. That’s why a simple base of gravel, pavers, or even a wooden frame can work wonders. It’s not about being fancy – it’s about keeping me level, allowing excess water to drain, and preventing my wood or metal sides from constantly touching wet soil.

For those who want the absolute best, a concrete slab or flagstone foundation is like a throne for me. But honestly, I’m just as happy with a bed of crushed stone or some deck tiles. The key is to avoid sealing me completely airtight – I need a little breathing room to release moisture, so please skip the solid plastic sheeting under me.

If you plan to move me around, casters or a lightweight base are perfect. But if I’m a permanent resident in your garden, a level, weed-blocked, and well-drained foundation will make me sing.
