How do you prevent rust on the underside of your metal benches?

As a metal bench who has weathered countless seasons in gardens, patios, and parks, I’ve learned that rust isn’t just a cosmetic enemy—it’s a structural one. The underside of a metal bench is where rust loves to creep in unnoticed. Rainwater splashes up from the ground, grass clippings stay damp against my legs, and condensation forms in the shade. But you can stop me from turning orange and flaky with a few simple habits.

First, give my underside a clean start. Before any coating, scrub off dirt, dust, and any existing rust with a wire brush or fine-grit sandpaper. Then wipe me dry—moisture trapped under paint is rust’s best friend.

Next, apply a rust-inhibiting primer designed for metal. I prefer a zinc-rich primer or a marine-grade anti-rust paint.
