Are your benches ADA compliant in terms of height and armrests?

First, let’s talk about height.

The ADA doesn’t specify a single “magic number” for bench seat height, but the widely accepted guideline for wheelchair transfer is a seat height between 17 and 19 inches from the ground. Many of my standard models fall right into that range. However, if you need a specific height to match your site’s wheelchair seat height, I can be adjusted or customized from 16 to 20 inches during manufacturing. So yes, I can be made compliant with a proper seat height—just let me know what you need.

Now, about armrests.

This is where things get a little more nuanced. The ADA requires that at least one accessible bench in a site have no armrests (or removable armrests) on the side where a wheelchair user transfers. Many of my models are available with either full armrests, no armrests, or a “transfer-friendly” design—where one armrest is shorter or removable. That way, I can support people who need to slide from a wheelchair onto the seat without a barrier. If you order me with the stationary armrest option, though, I won’t meet that requirement for solo transfer. Always check the product spec sheet: if it says “ADA transfer side” or “removable armrest,” you’re golden.
