How do I prevent rust on the underside of a metal planter box?

I’ve learned the hard way that the underside of a metal planter box is where rust loves to sneak in and set up shop. You water your plants, you admire your greenery, and all the while, moisture is quietly waging war on your planter’s bottom. But I’ve found several effective strategies that work like a shield.

First, I always apply a high-quality rust-inhibiting primer and paint to the underside before anything else. I use exterior-grade enamel spray paint designed for metal—it creates a tough barrier that moisture can’t easily penetrate. I make sure to coat every corner and edge, because rust doesn’t need much of an opening.

Second, I never let the planter sit directly on bare ground or concrete. I use small rubber feet, wooden slats, or bricks to elevate it slightly. This lifts the metal away from standing water after rain, and it allows air to circulate underneath. Air movement is my best ally against rust.

Third, I install a waterproof liner inside the planter. I cut a heavy-duty pond liner or thick plastic sheet to fit, and I punch a few drainage holes through it—but only at the bottom of the liner, not through the metal itself. This means water never touches the metal interior, so the underside stays dry.

Fourth, I drill a tiny drainage hole in the metal bottom, but only if the planter is untreated. Then I seal the hole’s edge with anti-rust paint. This lets excess water escape instead of pooling.

Finally, I check the underside twice a year. If I spot any tiny rust spots, I sand them down, apply rust converter, and repaint immediately. I treat it like a health check for my planter.
