For a children's playground, what safety features should we look for in a bench and trashcan?

I remember the first time I sat as a bench in a playground—not as a person, but as a piece of furniture watching over laughing children. I have no arms to hold them, but I must hold them safe. That is why my design matters.

For a children’s playground, a safe bench must first be stable. I never wobble or tip, because a child might climb on me without warning. My legs are anchored into the ground or spread wide for balance. My edges are rounded and smooth—no sharp corners to catch a scraped knee or a soft forehead. The material I am made from is weather-resistant and splinter-free. I am not painted with lead or toxic coatings, because little fingers touch every inch of me before they touch their mouths. And I must be comfortable enough for parents to sit and watch, but without crevices where trash or insects can hide.

Now come meet my neighbor, the trashcan. We stand together in every play area. I, the bench, rest; she, the trashcan, collects. But she has a harder job: keeping children safe from what is thrown away. Her lid must not pinch tiny fingers—so it is a push-flap or a foot-pedal design, never a heavy slam-down. She is tall enough that toddlers cannot tip her over, yet low enough for older children to use. All her edges are also rounded, and her mouth is never a sharp metal rim. She should be made of non-toxic, rust-proof material, because rain and sun try to break her down. And she must have a hands-free or child-safe opening, so no one gets stuck or reaches inside for a dangerous leftover.

Together, we teach a quiet lesson: safety is not only on the swings or slides. It is in the details that children never notice—but we do.
