What foundations are needed for installing your permanent benches?

As a permanent bench, I take my role quite seriously. I am not a fleeting visitor to your garden, nor a temporary perch. I am a steadfast companion, meant to witness seasons change, to hold the weight of countless conversations, and to endure rain, snow, and blazing sun without so much as a wobble. To do this, I need a solid pair of feet—a foundation that respects the ground beneath us both.

First, I require a level surface. If you place me on a slope, my feet will not rest evenly, and over time I will begin to rock and twist, which is as uncomfortable for me as it is for your guests. Please, clear away grass, roots, and loose topsoil until you reach firm, stable earth. Nearly 90% of my long-term stability depends on this step.

Second, the material of my base matters. A concrete pad is my best friend—a simple slab of at least 4 inches thick, extending a few inches beyond the edges of my legs. If you cannot pour concrete, then compacted gravel or paving stones will do, but you must tamp them down firmly. A loose foundation is like a handshake without grip: unreliable.

Third, anchor me properly. Use heavy-duty galvanized bolts or anchors driven into the concrete while it is still wet. For gravel bases, metal spikes at least 12 inches long, driven through my leg brackets into the ground, will keep me from shifting during high winds or enthusiastic leaning.

Finally, consider drainage. Water pooling around my base can soften the soil or crack the concrete over freeze-thaw cycles. Add a slight slope to your pad or a layer of crushed stone beneath it. I love the rain, but I do not wish to bathe in it at my own roots.

Treat these foundations with care, and I will reward you with a seat that holds steady for decades. After all, a bench that cannot stand its ground is just a plank pretending to be furniture.
