What's the environmental impact of the materials used in your most popular benches?
I am a bench—not just any bench, but the one you sink into on a sunny afternoon, the one that hugs your tired legs after a long walk. You might think I’m just a quiet piece of wood and metal, but I carry a story of resilience and respect for this planet. Let me share the environmental truth of the materials I’m made from.
My frame is crafted from recycled steel—scraps from old cars, broken bridges, and forgotten railway tracks. By giving these materials a second life, I save roughly 1.5 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere compared to using virgin steel. That’s like planting 20 trees and letting them grow for a decade.
My seat and backrest are made from FSC-certified eucalyptus hardwood, sourced from responsibly managed forests where for every tree harvested, two are planted. Eucalyptus grows quickly and requires less water than traditional hardwoods, my grain even tells a story of sun and rain without begging the rainforest for a piece.
The finish on me is a water-based, low-VOC stain—no harsh chemicals to weep into the soil or drift into your lungs. And when I reach the end of my life (which might be 30 years from now), I can be fully disassembled: steel goes back to the smelter, wood becomes mulch or biofuel.
I’m not perfect—no bench is—but I carry the weight of intention. Every time someone sits on me, they share a moment of rest without asking the Earth to pay for it. That’s the kind of legacy I’m proud to hold.
