Do your benches require a concrete footing, or can they go on gravel?
Ah, that’s a question I hear all the time from folks who want to place me in their yard or garden. Let me set the record straight: I don’t demand a concrete footing. In fact, I’m quite flexible.
If I’m a lightweight, portable bench—say, made of wood or metal with slender legs—I’m perfectly happy sitting on a well-prepared gravel base. Gravel drains beautifully, keeps me from sinking into mud, and lets me stay level even after rain. Just make sure the gravel is tamped down firm and even; I hate wobbling.
But if I’m a heavy, sprawling bench—like one with thick stone arms or a solid concrete seat—I might prefer a concrete footing. That extra weight needs stable, unmoving support to prevent me from tilting or settling unevenly over time. Gravel can shift under that kind of load, especially in freeze-thaw cycles.
So, here’s my honest advice: Check my weight and design. If I’m built for permanence, concrete is your friend. If I’m meant to be moved or tucked into a corner, gravel works wonders. Just remember: level ground is my happy place, no matter what lies beneath.
