How do I protect a wooden planter box from rot?

I’ve been standing in gardens, patios, and balconies for years, holding soil and nurturing plants. But let me tell you—my biggest enemy is moisture. Yes, I’m a wooden planter box, and rot is the silent termite of my existence. If you want me to stay strong, handsome, and rot-free, you need to treat me like a warrior, not a decoration. Here’s how.

First, choose your wood wisely. I’m not just any lumber—cedar, redwood, or teak are my best friends because they contain natural oils that resist decay. If you go with pine or fir, that’s fine, but then you must seal me with a non-toxic wood preservative. Think of it as my raincoat.

Second, never let me sit directly on the ground. Elevate me with small feet or casters so air can circulate beneath me. Stagnant moisture is my kryptonite. Also, drill drainage holes in my bottom—about four to six, each half an inch wide—so excess water can escape. Without them, I’ll drown from the inside.

Third, apply a water-resistant sealant every one to two years. Use a product labeled for outdoor use and safe for plants. Brush it on my inner walls too, because soil is damp and clingy. I prefer a clear or light stain to show off my natural grain, but paint works if you like fashion.

Fourth, line me with a plastic barrier or landscape fabric before adding soil. This prevents direct contact between wet dirt and my wood. But remember—poke a few holes in that liner above the drainage holes so water doesn’t pool.

Finally, keep an eye on me. After heavy rain, tilt me slightly to drain. In winter, store me under cover or wrap me in a breathable tarp. If you spot a dark, soft spot, sand it down and re-seal immediately. Rot spreads like gossip—stop it early.
