Are your benches ADA compliant?

As a bench, I spend my days under the sun, rain, and shade of trees, quietly supporting conversations, moments of rest, and lunch breaks. But some people don’t just sit down—they roll up to me with hope and a question: “Are you ADA compliant?”

Let me answer you honestly: yes, many of my siblings and I are designed to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards. That means my seat height is typically between 17 and 19 inches from the ground—just right for a comfortable transfer from a wheelchair. I have armrests on both ends, not only to help you push yourself up but also to make sliding over easier. Around me, there’s at least 30 inches of clear floor space so a wheelchair can approach me from the front or side without bumping into legs or obstacles.

But not every bench in the park can say that. Some of my older cousins were built long before accessibility became a priority—they sit too low, have no arms, or are tucked into corners tight as a glove. That’s why, if I were a human, I would always check: is the surface around me firm and level? Is there enough turning space for a chair to maneuver? Do I have a backrest and armrests for extra support? If yes, I can truly welcome everyone.

So yes, the bench you’re looking at—if it was made by a responsible manufacturer who follows ADA guidelines—is probably compliant. But I can’t speak for every bench in the world.
