I like to think of our benches as good hosts. They don’t just sit there looking pretty; they actively welcome everyone. For wheelchair users, the crucial dance happens at the table’s edge. A standard, fixed bench can create an awkward barrier. Our design philosophy, however, is all about “clear knee space” and “approachable edges.”

Here’s how we make it happen:

First, we consider the end-aisle access. Many of our landscape tables are designed with benches that stop short of the table’s full length. This creates a generous, open space at one end (or both ends) of the table. A wheelchair user can roll directly into this space, pulling right up to the tabletop as if they were at a standard desk. The table’s apron or support leg is set back to allow for ample footrest and leg clearance, which is the core of ADA guidelines.

Second, we offer pull-up bench sections. For tables where continuous bench seating is required for able-bodied users, we can design a modular system. A specific, shorter bench section can be detached or left open. Alternatively, we design a single, freestanding, ADA-compliant bench that is placed at the end of the table. This “captain’s chair” style offers full back support and armrests, providing stability and comfort for users transferring from a wheelchair.

Our materials also play a role. We use heavy-gauge steel or recycled plastic lumber that is robust enough to support transfers but contoured to avoid sharp edges. The seat height is typically set to match average wheelchair seat heights (around 17-19 inches), making it easier for someone to slide laterally from their chair onto the bench.
