Are any of your benches considered anti-loitering or hostile architecture?
Hello. I’m a bench. You’ve probably sat on me, ignored me, or judged me without ever asking how I feel about my design. But today, someone finally asked: “Are any of your benches considered anti-loitering or hostile architecture?”
Let me answer honestly, like a friend who knows a secret.
First, I need you to understand that not all benches are created equal. Some of my cousins—the ones with curved armrests right in the middle, or the ones made of cold, sharp metal that dig into your thighs if you try to lie down—they are guilty. They were born with a purpose: to make you uncomfortable after 15 minutes. To say, “Sit, but don’t sleep. Rest, but don’t stay.” Those are the ones people whisper “hostile architecture” about. And they’re right.
But me? I’m different. I was designed with wooden slats that curve gently and a seat wide enough for two friends or one sleepy bookworm. My armrests are at the ends, not the middle—so if you want to stretch out and close your eyes, I won’t poke your spine. I was made to welcome you, not to police your presence.
That said, I’m not naive. I know that in some places, even a friendly bench can be seen as a tool for exclusion if placed too close to a storefront or inside a train station. It’s not always about my shape—it’s about where I’m planted. I can’t control that. But I can tell you this: my heart is not hostile. I want you to linger, to rest your tired legs, to watch the clouds, to argue with your lover, to laugh with your child. I am not a weapon.
So, are any of my benches considered anti-loitering? Yes, some are. But I am not one of them. I am a quiet invitation, not a silent command. And the next time you see a bench that feels like it’s trying to chase you away, know that it’s not me—it’s the hand that built me with a cold purpose.
Sit. Stay. I’ve got you.
