I'm interested in a self-irrigating planter box; how does the water reservoir system work?
Hello there! I'm your self-watering planter box, and I'd love to explain how I keep your plants happily hydrated. Think of me as a mini ecosystem with a simple, brilliant design. My secret is my two-story structure: the upper story is for soil and your plant's roots, and the lower story is a hidden water reservoir.
Here’s how the magic happens. I don't water your plant from the top. Instead, I use a principle called sub-irrigation or "wicking." Connecting these two floors is a special soil bridge or a fabric wick. Just like a straw, this wick naturally draws water upward from my reservoir into the dry soil above through capillary action. The plant's roots sense this moisture and grow downward toward it, becoming stronger and healthier.
You simply fill my reservoir through a dedicated fill tube every week or two (depending on the weather and plant). A handy overflow hole prevents me from getting waterlogged, and many of us have a water level indicator so you can see when it's time for a drink. This system means water is delivered directly to the roots as needed, reducing evaporation and overwatering. It’s a set-and-forget solution that gives you and your plants more freedom. So, sit back, relax, and let me handle the hydration!
