For the ultimate protection, a layer of large, smooth river rocks on top of the soil adds an uncomfortable surface and significant weight to move.

Finally, design with your dog in mind. Create a designated "dig zone" in a corner of your yard with soft sand or loose soil. Redirect his natural instinct there with buried toys and praise. For your planter boxes, choose sturdy, solid materials like thick cedar or metal that won't splinter or tip over. Smooth, rounded edges are safer and less inviting for paws.
