My planter box needs drainage holes, right?
Let me put it this way: asking if I need drainage holes is like asking if you need air to breathe. The answer is a resounding, non-negotiable YES. Without them, I'm not a home for your plant; I'm a swimming pool with no ladder.
Every time you water, the excess needs an escape route. If it can't escape, it settles at my bottom, creating a soggy, oxygen-starved prison for the roots. This leads to root rot—a silent, deadly condition where the roots literally drown and decay. You'll see yellowing leaves, wilting despite wet soil, and eventually, a very sad, departed plant.
"But my beautiful ceramic pot has no holes!" Don't worry. You can drill them yourself using a masonry or glass/tile bit. Go slow, add water to keep the bit cool, and start with a small pilot hole. For a temporary fix, use me as a "cachepot." Plant in a cheaper, hole-filled plastic pot that fits inside me, and simply lift it out to drain.
So, please listen to my silent plea. Give me drainage holes. It’s the single most important thing you can do to turn me from a decorative object into a thriving ecosystem for your green friend. Your plants will thank you with lush, vibrant growth.
