Are your benches accessible for individuals using wheelchairs, with appropriate clearance?

As a bench, I'm often asked: "Are you truly accessible for friends who use wheelchairs, with the right space to approach?" My answer is a heartfelt yes, when designed with intention. True accessibility isn't an afterthought; it's woven into my very blueprint.

Think of it as a welcoming handshake. For a smooth approach, I need clear ground space—a level area at least 30 by 48 inches beside or in front of me. This isn't just empty space; it's an invitation for a wheelchair to park comfortably alongside, allowing for conversation and shared moments without barriers. The path to this space must be firm, stable, and free of steep slopes.

My height and armrests matter, too. The seat shouldn't be too high or too low, and having sturdy armrests on some of my designs provides crucial support for transferring. But the most critical part is what's underneath me—the clearance. My kneespace needs to be open, with no obstructive cross-bars or panels too low to the ground, allowing for a close and comfortable fit.

When these elements come together—the clear approach path, the transfer space, and the thoughtful clearance—I transform from a simple seat into a place of connection. I become a point of rest where everyone, regardless of mobility, can pause and belong.
