Are the benches anchored to the ground, and if so, how?
Have you ever wondered how we benches manage to stay put, day after day, through bustling crowds and howling winds? The answer isn't magic—it's a thoughtful embrace with the earth. Yes, most of us in public spaces are firmly anchored, and for good reason. Our primary duty is to offer unwavering support, and that means not tipping over when you sit or becoming a hazard or a target for theft.
Our connection to the ground is a silent pact of safety. The most common embrace is through concrete. Often, my legs are set deep into wet concrete during installation, creating a permanent foundation known as a concrete footing. Once it cures, we are essentially part of the landscape. For a less permanent but still steadfast hold, surface mounts are used. Here, flanges or plates at the base of my legs are bolted directly onto a pre-existing concrete pad or sidewalk using heavy-duty, often vandal-resistant, bolts.
Some of my siblings in high-security areas might use specialized ground anchors—tough metal stakes driven deep into the soil, hidden from view but providing immense pull-out resistance. This variety of methods, from buried concrete to visible bolts, is our unseen security system. It’s how we fulfill our promise: to be a reliable, fixed point of rest in a moving world, ensuring that the only thing that moves is your conversation, while we remain steadfastly, reliably grounded.
