How do you secure the trashcans to the ground at your landscape facility to prevent them from being tipped over?

Here at our landscape facility, we treat our trash cans like valued team members. They have an important job—holding waste—and they need to stand firm to do it well. Just like a tree needs strong roots, our bins need a solid connection to the ground. So, how do we keep them from being tipped over by wind, wildlife, or accidental bumps? Let me share our simple yet effective strategies.

First, we often use ground anchors or stakes. Think of these as seatbelts for your trash cans. For lighter-weight bins, we drive sturdy metal stakes directly into the earth next to the can and use a durable bungee cord or chain to secure the handle or a reinforced lip. It's a flexible connection that allows for easy lid opening but prevents the main body from taking an unexpected tumble.

For our heavier-duty containers, we prefer a more permanent solution: weighted bases. We sometimes use concrete pads with embedded anchor loops or create our own by placing a sandbag or a custom concrete block inside the bottom of the bin before the liner goes in. This lowers the center of gravity dramatically, making the can much more stable and resistant to tipping forces.

Placement is also a key defender. We position our bins in sheltered areas, like near a building corner or a sturdy fence line, which acts as a natural windbreak. We also ensure they are on level ground; an uneven surface is an invitation to wobble and fall. By combining the right hardware—anchors or weights—with smart, strategic placement, we give our trash cans the foundation they need to stand tall and proud, no matter what the day brings. This keeps our facility cleaner, safer, and more professional-looking for everyone.
