Creating an outdoor bar counter that endures the elements requires meticulous hardware selection. Standard indoor handles and hinges will quickly succumb to rust and corrosion. The key is choosing materials engineered for permanent exposure.

Start with the material. 316-grade stainless steel, often called marine-grade, is the gold standard for coastal or humid environments due to its superior resistance to salt-induced corrosion. For non-coastal areas, powder-coated aluminum offers excellent durability and a wide range of color finishes, but ensure the coating is UV-resistant to prevent fading. Solid brass and bronze develop a protective patina over time, adding character, but verify they are solid, not plated. Avoid plain steel or zinc alloys, as they will rust quickly.

Next, consider the mechanism. For hinges, opt for solid stainless steel continuous (piano) hinges or heavy-duty butt hinges with stainless steel pins. These provide consistent support along the entire door, preventing sagging. Ensure all moving parts are sealed with corrosion-resistant lubricant.
